wednesday 12 November the House of Lords approved Government
plans for weaker cannabis laws. Peers backed the move by 63
votes to 37. In a surprise move, the Conservative front bench abstained during the Lords' vote. However, Peers backed a separate motion which expressed concern that the Government's plans could increase cannabis use among young people. The House of Commons has already voted in favour of weaker laws. On Wednesday 29 October, MPs voted by 316 to 160 in support of reclassifying cannabis. Cannabis will be reclassified from a class B to a class C drug - putting it on the same level as sleeping pills. The reclassification will take affect on 29 January 2004.
