The Government has no plans to reduce the 24 week limit for abortion, a health minister has announced.

Speaking to a committee of MPs, health minister Dawn Primarolo said there is not enough scientific evidence to support a change.

However, that view has been strongly criticised by a member of the committee, Conservative MP Nadine Dories, in The Daily Telegraph New window icon and Dr Roxana Chapman, fellow of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, in the Daily Mail New window icon.

Meanwhile The Times New window icon reports that pro-abortion MPs will push for a significant liberalisation of the abortion law.

They want to remove the requirement for two doctors' signatures, to allow nurses to carry out abortions up to 12 weeks, and to allow women to carry out the second stage of a medical abortion at home rather than a clinic.
