The head of Stonewall wants a proposed 'gay hate' law to mirror similar laws on race rather than religion.
The religious hatred law includes robust protections for free speech and religious liberty but the race hate laws do not.
Ben Summerskill made his comments to a committee of MPs on Tuesday 16 October 2007. The committee was taking evidence on the Criminal Justice and Immigration Bill, which the Government wants to amend to include a law against inciting 'homophobic hatred'.
