Jim Dobbin MP has concerns over the Embryology Bill.
Pro-life Labour MPs are preparing to vote against the Government's proposals to relax the law on fertilisation and embryo research, according to The Observer.
Although Labour MPs will be allowed to vote freely on any proposals concerning abortion, the expectation is that they will be whipped to vote in line with the Government's proposals in the Bill.
The proposals include plans to allow three-parent families, animal-human hybrid embryos for research and IVF for lesbians without the requirement to consider the 'child's need for a father'.
Some MPs have already called on the Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, to allow them to vote freely on these matters. Now reports suggest that several MPs plan to vote against parts of the Bill on grounds of conscience, whether they are given the free vote or not.
The unofficial leader of up to 40 pro-life backbenchers, Jim Dobbin MP, is expected to meet with Chief Whip Geoff Hoon this week, and Mr Brown next month, to discuss MPs' concerns.
