Who runs the theatre?
The Theatre Royal is owned by Newcastle City Council, which leases the building to the company 'Newcastle Theatre Royal Trust Limited' at a peppercorn rent. The directors of the Theatre Royal are nominated by Newcastle City Council - 7 of the theatre's directors are Councillors.
Public money
During the year ended 31 March 2005 the Theatre Royal received £665,800 of tax-payers’ money from Newcastle City Council. During 2005 the Theatre Royal also received £44,558 from Northern Arts (Arts Council grant). (Newcastle Theatre Royal Trust Limited, Directors' Report and Accounts for the Year Ended 31 March 2005, pages 2 and 10)
Targeting schoolchildren
A promotional flyer for the show at the Theatre Royal advertises concessions for children under eighteen in full time education. Yet the DVD of the show has an '18' rating because of the extreme foul language and sexual content.
