When are the shows?
19th - 24th June 2006
Who runs the theatre?
The Royal Concert Hall, which will be showing Jerry Springer the Opera, is owned and funded by Nottingham City Council.
Equality Policy
Nottingham City Council's 'Equality and Diversity Policy' states: "The City Council will not permit its buildings to be used to incite hatred against others, including racial and religious hatred." (Equality and Diversity Policy, Nottingham City Council, 2004, page 30)
Surely showing Jerry Springer the Opera breaches the Council's equality policy? Indeed, Stewart Lee, the producer and co-author of Jerry Springer the Opera, has stated: "One would like to think that comedy could incite religious hatred. That would be great." (The Independent on Sunday, 5 December 2004). The Council would not allow a production which spitefully mocks Mohammed or derides Hindu beliefs in such a way.
Targetting children
The theatre's website advertises concessions for children, whilst stating the show: "Contains extremely strong language and sexual content". The DVD of the show has an '18' rating because of the extreme foul language and sexual content.
