Another council bans Executive's sex lessons

A fourth Scottish council has banned the explicit classroom sex education resources which are controversially recommended by the Scottish Executive.

Renfrewshire Council yesterday decided to ban Taking Sex Seriously and The Primary School Sex and Relationships Education Pack after consulting with parents and education experts.

Lessons from the two packs include discussing partner swapping and sado-masochism, a 'homework task' of buying condoms, and teaching primary children about anal intercourse.

Renfrewshire joins East Renfrewshire, North Lanarkshire, and the Western Isles in banning some or all of the controversial Executive-backed resources. It is expected that other councils will soon follow.

Christian research organisation, The Christian Institute, has been campaigning against these and other controversial materials since March last year.

Colin Hart, Director of The Christian Institute, said: "We are delighted that yet another council has decided to ban these damaging materials. It seems that local councils are more in touch with the concerns of ordinary parents than the Executive."

"We have yet to hear officially what the Executive plans to do with its recommended list, but there is speculation in the press that it will be changed. We very much hope these inappropriate materials will be withdrawn."

"In the meantime, we urge other Councils to follow the example of Renfrewshire and re-examine their sex education policy. These materials are entirely inappropriate and should be banned by every council in Scotland."
